According to different power sources, it is divided into three types: electric anchor winch, hydraulic anchor winch, and steam anchor winch, with roughly the same structure. Electric anchor winch are widely used on internal combustion engine ships, while steam anchor winch are currently rarely used on sea vessels. In order to prevent fire and explosion, steam anchor winch are also used on oil tankers.

Small and medium-sized ships are generally equipped with double chain wheel horizontal anchor windlass; Large ships, especially those with a wider bow deck, are more suitable for single-sided (single chain) horizontal anchor cranes. Vertical anchor winches are rarely used on transport ships, but for some ships where the deck area for arranging anchor equipment is small or for other reasons it is not suitable to use horizontal anchor winches, vertical winches should be used.
