A VHF antenna mount on a boat is typically mounted on the highest point possible, such as the mast or the top of the cabin or T-top. The goal is to have the antenna elevated and clear from any obstructions that may interfere with its signal transmission and reception. Additionally, the mount should be positioned in a location that allows for a clear 360º view, as VHF radio signals are line-of-sight and can be affected by obstacles like structures or topography.

Most VHF antennas are installed using a versatile ratchet mount. Mounts feature threaded bases for attaching antennas and enable angle adjustment from side to side and fore and aft to make the antenna as vertical as possible. A quick-release lever allows folding down the antenna for low bridges, trailer and storage. For hardtops, use a robust stainless-steel ratchet mount, rather than the plastic versions that might break in rough seas or degrade over time from UV exposure.

For the preservation of stainless steel regular maintenance is strongly recommended. The following provides a guide to preserving stainless steel, grades 304 and 316. As for all surfaces, stainless steel requires cleaning to remove dirt and grime. The level of cleaning, maintenance and inspection required depends primarily on the environment. In some exterior instances, normal rain washing is sufficient. In more polluted or corrosive environments, particularly in coastal situations and swimming pools, the surfaces require regular washing to maintain their good looks.
